So the literal meaning of autophagy is \u201cself-eating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"572\">It\u2019s also referred to as \u201cself-devouring.\u201d While that may sound like something you never want to happen to your body, it\u2019s actually beneficial to your overall health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"573\">This is because autophagy is an evolutionary self-preservation mechanism through which the body can remove the dysfunctional cells and recycle parts of them toward cellular repair and cleaning, according to board-certified cardiologist,\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717 js-evernote-checked\" href=\"http:\/\/www.luizapetremd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-evernote-id=\"0\">Dr. Luiza Petre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"574\">Petre explains that the purpose of autophagy is to remove debris and self-regulate back to optimal smooth function.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"575\">\u201cIt is recycling and cleaning at the same time, just like hitting a reset button to your body. Plus, it promotes survival and adaptation as a response to various stressors and toxins accumulated in our cells,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-0 js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"582\">\n<h2><a class=\"chartbeat-section\" name=\"benefits\"><\/a>What are the benefits of autophagy?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"586\">The main benefits of autophagy seem to come in the form of anti-aging principles. In fact, Petre says it\u2019s best known as the body\u2019s way of turning the clock back and creating younger cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"587\">Khorana points out that when our cells are stressed, autophagy is increased in order to protect us, which helps enhance your lifespan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"588\">Additionally, registered dietitian,\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717 js-evernote-checked\" href=\"http:\/\/keatleymnt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-evernote-id=\"1\">Scott Keatley<\/a>, RD, CDN, says that in times of starvation, autophagy keeps the body going by breaking down cellular material and reusing it for necessary processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"589\">\u201cOf course this takes energy and cannot continue forever, but it gives us more time to find nourishment,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"590\">At the cellular level, Petre says the benefits of autophagy include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"591\">\n<li class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"592\">removing toxic proteins from the cells that are attributed to neurodegenerative diseases, such as\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717 js-evernote-checked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/parkinsons-warning-signs\" data-evernote-id=\"2\">Parkinson\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717 js-evernote-checked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/alzheimers-disease\" data-evernote-id=\"3\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"593\">recycling residual proteins<\/li>\n<li class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"594\">providing energy and building blocks for cells that could still benefit from repair<\/li>\n<li class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"595\">on a larger scale, it prompts regeneration and healthy cells<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"596\">Autophagy is receiving a lot of attention for the role it may play in preventing or treating cancer, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"597\">\u201cAutophagy declines as we age, so this means cells that no longer work or may do harm are allowed to multiply, which is the MO of cancer cells,\u201d explains Keatley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"598\">While all cancers start from some sort of defective cells, Petre says that the body should recognize and remove those cells, often using autophagic processes. It will begin to use fat for fuel instead of the glucose that\u2019s derived from carbohydrates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"626\">In response to this restriction, your body will begin to start producing ketone bodies that have many protective effects. Khorana says studies suggest that ketosis can also cause starvation-induced autophagy, which has neuroprotective functions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"627\">\u201cLow glucose levels occur in both diets and are linked to low insulin and high glucagon levels,\u201d explains Petre. And glucagon level is the one that initiates autophagy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"628\">\u201cWhen the body is low on sugar through fasting or ketosis, it brings the positive stress that wakes up the survival repairing mode,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-evernote-checked\" data-evernote-id=\"629\">One non-diet area that may also play a role in inducing autophagy is exercise.
